05. Treat AI as an instrument, not a tool

Last year at Cannes, there was an undercurrent of unease around AI and how it would transform the creative industry. The mood in 2026 shifted to one of collaboration, with the emphasis on human creativity.

AI is an instrument, not a tool. And if AI is an instrument, you want the best human players wielding it. A guitar in an amateur’s hands is terrible; in Prince’s hands, it is magic. The stronger AI gets, the stronger our human creativity needs to be.

When technology makes ‘good’ content virtually free to produce, ‘good’ isn’t enough. To achieve excellence, brands need human judgment, distinctiveness and raw emotion. While AI can analyse patterns, explore possibilities and accelerate production at an impossible scale, it can’t understand which human truth is emotionally or culturally meaningful.

Human connection is the soul of a brand.

This human-first philosophy was reflected in every single Lion-winning innovation this year, each starting not with a technological capability, but with a genuine human problem – from designing shoes for people with disabilities and managing excess renewable city energy, to protecting the stolen phones and savings of citizens, and supporting elderly people with dementia who have lost their connection to time and memory.

But while human creativity is paramount, the quality of the technological system underpinning it is fundamentally important. We are seeing a shift from simple creative outputs to intelligent "systems of making."

In a world where content is infinite and cheap, value migrates from the asset to the system that produces it. The job is no longer to make the thing. It's to build the intelligent, on-brand engine that makes a thousand things, with human taste as the filter.

WPP Brand and Design

Artist Daniel Arsham positioned AI within a longer history of technology removing creative limitations. The paint tube allowed Impressionists to leave their studios, recorded sound led to new musical genres AI is the new creative foundation. The true opportunity is to treat AI as a powerful amplifier of human capability, liberating teams from repetitive production tasks so they can dedicate their energy to imagination, judgment and high-value decision-making.

The opportunity

Stop viewing AI as a cost-cutting shortcut for creative generation and start treating it as an instrument that requires highly skilled human talent to play. The competitive edge is no longer access to AI tools, but the taste, curiosity and human intuition brought to them. Shift your focus from output volume to the quality of the human inputs. Use AI to automate execution and eliminate friction but fiercely protect human imagination and strategic judgment as the irreplaceable core of your brand’s creative and commercial value.
