07. Don’t discount an irreplaceable human currency: trust

As we navigate a landscape redefined by algorithmic speed, synthetic content and automated distribution, we must remember the ultimate behavioural driver: human trust.

While technology can optimise for immediate transactional loops, it can’t create true desire or belief. In the synthetic AI environment, human recommendation and lived experience are becoming more valuable, not less. The Cannes Design Jury identified this as a powerful macro-trend: "Trust is a paramount human need... human made, hand crafted is a gentle rebellion for the comfort of craft, localised authenticity and things we can hold, touch, trust and love." In an automated world, trust will increasingly come from evidence that real people like us made real decisions for real reasons.

This return to trust as a core business metric requires us to shift our focus from short-term conversion loops to long-term brand building – or what WPP Media Chief Strategy Officer David Rusli calls the "anticipation economy." Research reveals that 72% of luxury consumers (and an even higher percentage of Gen Z) agree that an item worth waiting for is worth more than one that is immediately available. By focusing on the "Return on Memories and Inspiration" (ROMI) rather than hyper-optimised, real-time clicks, brands can cultivate deep emotional desire and long-term loyalty.

This patient, trust-building philosophy is brilliantly illustrated by Mastercard’s seven-year journey to develop, test and scale its sonic identity across global touchpoints. This was not a fast campaign, but an obsessive, dedicated strategy to establish an auditory trust heuristic at over three billion points of purchase. Compounding brand trust requires doing the unglamorous, long-term work of building robust systems that sustain honest, consistent brand promises over time.

Ultimately, trust is not a passive byproduct of marketing; it is an active, designed outcome. At a moment of artificial abundance, the most powerful commercial signal a brand can send is that a human cared enough to slow down, listen and craft something of genuine substance. When we embrace the "glory of human imperfection" and design our brand experiences with intent, we transition from merely capturing attention to earning deep, unshakable belief.

The opportunity

In a marketplace of instant clicks and AI-generated noise, trust is your most defensive, high-margin asset. CMOs must not obsess over real-time transactional metrics at the expense of long-term reputation capital. Commit to playing the long game: invest in your backend data plumbing to ensure consistency, design brand experiences that feed the powerful human appetite for anticipation and always make your brand's truth feel like something – because that is the one thing machines can never take away from us. Ultimately, building and maintaining this irreplaceable currency is the foundation of our role as the trusted growth partner.
