A rising tide of disillusionment is affecting young people globally. Faced with a challenging mental health landscape, many in the next generation are beginning to believe their ambitious dreams are simply unattainable. For a brand like Nike, whose entire ethos is built on the power of aspiration and achieving the impossible, this cultural shift presents a profound challenge. How can a brand inspire greatness in a generation that is at risk of losing its capacity to dream?
To launch the new dream-inspired Mercurial boots for global icon Kylian Mbappé, Nike needed to do more than just drop a product. The challenge was to create an activation that could meaningfully combat the growing cynicism among young people. It needed to transform an ordinary boot launch into a powerful, tangible statement on self-belief, proving to a new generation that their own ambition is the most powerful tool they possess.
AKQA, part of WPP, looked to the origin of Kylian Mbappé’s own dream: his childhood bedroom in Bondy, France. The strategy was not to just tell this story, but to make it an immersive, interactive training ground for the mind. By physically reimagining the room, they created a portal into the mindset of a champion. The approach was to invite young dreamers and key cultural influencers inside, not as spectators, but as active participants who had to prove their own ambition.
"The Room" was an immersive experience coached by an AI version of a young Mbappé. Inside, participants faced a series of mental trials based directly on his own childhood dream routine – from manifesting their own dreams on fake magazine covers to practising for press conferences before anyone knew his name. Only by completing the challenges and demonstrating their own drive could they unlock the new Mercurial boots and a final lesson from Mbappé himself. It transformed a product launch into a rite of passage, where the prize had to be earned through belief.
The mindset cultivated in The Room spread globally, generating over 60 million views and driving engagement at 2.5 times higher than the benchmark. More importantly, it created a lasting sense of conviction. Participants left not just with a new pair of boots, but with tangible proof that their own ambitious dreams were achievable. The launch proved that for sport, and for the next generation, the most powerful tool is inspiration.
