Ford Corporate Crossings Building Receives LEED Silver Certification

DEARBORN, MI — Team Detroit, Ford Motor Company’s marketing and advertising agency of record has won an EBie award. The award, given by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its New York branch, the Urban Green Council, is given to those at the grassroots level who are responsible for driving the green retro-fitting of an existing building. Team Detroit was honored as part of the first annual EBie awards ceremony in New York City’s Times Square last night. Team Detroit and Ford Land were awarded the “Smooth Operator” EBie, which recognizes the building that was most improved by simply altering operations and maintenance.

Team Detroit has sponsored Team Green, an internal group of employees dedicated to making their workplace more sustainable and efficient, since 2008. This EBie award is based on a number of building improvements including increased recycling opportunities and the implementation of U.S. Green Building Council-certified janitorial supplies, soy-based ink, eco-friendly paper, reusable mugs and compostable plates.

Kristen Schweitzer, Team Detroit SVP and Team Green Director, is especially excited. “We’re thrilled to have been awarded one of the first EBies ever. It all started with a group of dedicated volunteers, and with the support of Team Detroit’s leadership committee and our partners at Ford Land we’ve been able to make amazing strides in improving the green footprint of our building. And to be recognized for those efforts as one of the best in the country is quite an honor.”

Recently Corporate Crossings, a Ford Land building in Dearborn that houses Team Detroit, was also honored with LEED Silver certification by the USGBC. The building temperature is regulated by a green system that lowers/raises the temperature based on the season, and the lights are motion-activated to avoid wasted electricity. All monitors, TV screens, projectors, and common area lighting systems are set to automatically power down at the end of each day.

"It is wonderful to see a team of employees that are so passionate about creating a sustainable workplace," said Donna Inch, Ford Land chairman and CEO. "The EBie award proves that great things can be accomplished when corporations and employees are committed to environmentally responsible building use and management."

According to Team Detroit’s Chief Creative Officer, Toby Barlow, "Sustainability doesn't mean much unless we all do it together. I'm incredibly proud to be a part of a community like Team Detroit. It makes me really happy to see how many ideas people have and how hard they're willing to work to make it happen.”

But Barlow doesn’t want to coast on what they’ve already accomplished. He explains, “We've done a lot and I'm hopeful that we can build from these successes to do even more in the future… because there's a lot more that needs to be done.”

Team Detroit’s Team Green has maintained several agency-wide recycling events, clothing drives, farmer’s markets, carpool initiatives, green fairs and other sustainability events. Their efforts have supported Habitat for Humanity, Detroit’s Eastern Market, Purple Heart, and Greening of Detroit.
