Tom George promoted to Chairman MEC North Europe, Steve Hatch becomes CEO MEC UK

MEC,, a leading media agency, today named Tom George as Chairman, North Europe MEC. Steve Hatch has been promoted to the role of Chief Executive Officer, MEC UK.

The announcement was made by Alastair Aird, Global COO and Chairman EMEA for MEC.

The appointments are effective immediately. Tom will report to Alastair Aird and he has also been named to MEC’s Global Executive Committee. Steve will continue to report to Tom George as part of the new regional structure and he will shortly announce his management line-up for the UK.

In this new role, Tom will have regional management responsibility for the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Belgium and The Netherlands in Europe and the company’s 4 agencies in South Africa; totaling over 850 employees and over $3 billion in billings, per RECMA.

Working with each market’s CEO, Tom will be charged with developing MEC’s resources, product and strategy across these nine markets, driving new business and delivering Active Engagement to local and multi-national clients across the region.

Tom George
Tom began his agency life by joining the full-service agency Dorland in 1986. He joined Zenith at its inception where he worked his way through the ranks to become Group Account Director with responsibility for the £100m Kingfisher business as well as both Lloyds TSB and HBOS. He was promoted to Deputy MD in 2002. In 2004, Tom joined MEC as MD and became CEO in 2006. During Tom’s tenure, the agency has more than doubled in size to become a £500m billing business rising to number five in the rankings adding Lloyds Banking Group, Orange, Danone, Nintendo, and MBNA accounts amongst others. Under his tenure, MEC has also won Campaign magazine, Marketing magazine and Mediaweek’s Media Agency of the Year award and was named the IPA’s Effectiveness Company of the Year. In 2009 Tom was also named one of the UK’s top ten CEO’s by Campaign.

Steve Hatch
Steve began his career working for Unilever at Initiative Media before moving to BMP DDB to work on Sony, British Gas and the award winning Spillers account. He then joined PHD, where he spent two years working on the BBC as well as the launching the UK’s first online bank, Egg. Steve found his long-term home in 1998 when he joined MEC. Becoming the first head of Strategy in 2002, he has had a pivotal role in the development of MEC’s global operating system, MEC Navigator, as well as retaining wide-ranging client responsibilities. In 2006 Steve became Managing Director of the UK, the country’s fastest growing agency. His particular obsession is the role of ideas in driving communications and “Rigorous Magic”, his book on communications ideas and their application was published by Wiley in March 2007.
