Industry effort helps boost creativity in Hong Kong
20 April, 2010
— Ogilvy, the official city host of Portfolio Night 8 in Hong Kong, is organizing a portfolio review night with 20 top local creative directors on Thursday, May 20, 2010, aimed at fostering a greater creative atmosphere within the community and nurturing and inspiring the next generation of young creative talent.
Portfolio Night is the largest advertising portfolio review in the world. This is the eighth year that creative directors in separate locations review the portfolios of upcoming creative youth simultaneously. Including Hong Kong, there are a total of 37 cities hosting this event this year. Hong Kong is one of the few cities in Asia Pacific to host the event, representing its support for its young creatives and building further goodwill as the region’s capital of creativity.
“The government has shown great dedication in helping expedite the development of creative industries by earmarking HK$300 million for the coming three financial years starting from 2009/10. As the industry leader in integrated communications, Ogilvy is proud to take a primary role in supporting the government initiative to help identify and boost creative talent in Hong Kong,” said Adam O’Conor, Managing Director, Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong.
In a set-up similar to 'speed dating', young creatives who are eager to exhibit their advertising portfolios will have a chance to meet with three top creative directors in Hong Kong. Sixty young creative talents will be paired randomly with 20 top creative directors in Hong Kong from different agencies so that they can gain first-hand professional advice and direction on how to improve their portfolios. According to statistics, around 80 percent of all participants who attend Portfolio Night walk away with a job.
“However, this is not purely a recruitment exercise for the advertising agencies and young talents. It is also a night to share and celebrate ideas. Students are encouraged to present their finest work, and they will be challenged by creative directors to offer fresh and interesting ideas,” O’Conor said. “With this being Ogilvy’s first time to host the event in Hong Kong, we are eager to have the opportunity to support and inspire the next generation who will form the backbone of our future creative talent pool. Ogilvy has always been viewed as a great ‘training school’ for young people. Through this we hope to open up more opportunities for potential candidates to start their careers in the creative industry.
“Ogilvy believes that creativity does not only exist in highly artistic people in the industry, but is something that can be found in almost anyone’s DNA regardless of their roles. Therefore, we welcome anyone who has a portfolio of ideas to join Portfolio Night 8, not just those students engaged in the advertising world,” he said.
Portfolio Night 8 Hong Kong will be held in Hong Kong Fringe Club on May 20, 2010 from 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm. This is a closed event limited to registered young creatives, invited guests and media only.
