BatesAsia and MeThinks combine to strengthen activation offering to clients

BatesAsia 141 (“BatesAsia”), the world’s largest Asia-devoted marketing communications network and a WPP company, has agreed to acquire China’s top integrated activation agency, MeThinks.

The deal was officially inked at a ceremony in Shanghai, China, attended by WPP Chief Executive Officer Sir Martin Sorrell, BatesAsia President Jeffrey Yu and China CEO Arthur Yu, MeThinks General Manager Hu Meifang and Executive President Wang Weixing.

“The acquisition will strengthen our activation footprint across the whole of Asia and will give us the opportunity to grow from working with some of the world’s greatest brands including adidas, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, and Gillette to name a few,” said Jeffrey.

“With its solid expertise, strategic innovation and extensive network in more than 40 cities, MeThinks is one of the most influential activation agencies in China. Our combined prowess raises the stakes by several notches in terms of the expansion of our reach in China and the type of change-building work, from first mile to last, for both domestic and international clients,” added Arthur.

Established in 1999 originally as a graphics production studio, MeThinks steadily expanded into a fully integrated BTL agency, offering the full gamut of services including strategic planning, market research, sales promotion, channel management and expansion.

Backed by a team with in-depth insight of the local market as well as an international background, MeThinks attracts top brands with its strategic innovation. Its clients include a long and growing list of Fortune 500, and top Chinese companies across myriad industries including FMCG, finance, electrical appliances and IT, among others. The likes of adidas, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Gillette, Bank of China, National Panasonic, Duracell and Cow and Gate, are just some of the top global and category-leading brands that make up its portfolio.

Its coverage in more than 40 major cities also includes a vast network of channels and touch points such as shopping malls, gyms, and other event venues.

This is BatesAsia’s second acquisition in China this year, following the formation of Bates Apex in February. Established in 1993 in Chengdu, Apex became one of the most recognized creative agencies in West China. Its most famous campaigns included Mengniu’s “Designated Dairy Product of Chinese Astronauts”. It is also the only China domestic advertising company to win the internationally renowned EFFIE creative award twice.

“We will introduce our 141 shopper marketing proprietary tools to this new entity– Shopper Pulse™ and Market Pulse™ – to further boost our offerings to clients and our own competitiveness,” added Arthur.
