Michael Patti joins Y&R New York as its Chairman and CEO
7 February, 2003
Y&R Advertising announced today that Michael Patti was joining the agency as Chairman and CEO of the flagship Y&RNY agency. He will also serve as Worldwide Creative Director. The appointment is effective as of March 1.
"We are tremendously excited that Michael is joining Y&R," said Michael J. Dolan, Chairman and CEO of Y&R Advertising and Young & Rubicam Inc. "Michael will be a spectacular addition to our agency. He's got brilliant creative instincts, a reel that is a source of genuine envy, and a solid history of building strong relationships with clients that lead to memorable, brand-building advertising."
He continued, "Michael comes to an agency that has a wonderful, deep bench of talented professionals. He believes in teams and the work he's done, demonstrates their power. He will make us better, stronger, able to deliver the kind of breakthrough advertising our clients need now more than any time in history. In bringing Michael to Y&R, we follow our great tradition of creative people heading the agency, that started with our founder, Raymond Rubicam. This is a wonderful turn in our history. And I am confident we will be uplifted across our network."
Patti comes to Y&R from BBDO NY, where he was most recently Vice Chairman and Senior Executive Creative Director. In his 18 years there, he has worked on some of the most commended and awarded campaigns, including Pepsi and the recent re-launch of General Electric. His work on Pepsi has won 12 Lions in the past nine years among a long list of other awards. Last year, Patti was part of the team that created the campaign to encourage tourism in New York (post September 11th) that featured Dr. Henry Kissinger, Woody Allen, Robert DeNiro, Billy Crystal and others.
"When I was going to school at the School of Visual Arts, I used to come to Y&R to put my book together,"” said Michael Patti. "Y&R was the agency we all thought of when you said 'Madison Avenue'’ and, in fact, today it's the only agency on Madison Avenue. This is a great moment for me. I feel like I've come full circle," he said.
"My decision to come here was based on looking to the future, however, not the past. I have great respect for Mike Dolan. We've had lots of dinners and have become good friends. I think we will complement each other and will be great working partners. We think alike, we share the same goal — doing great work for great clients. And that's just what we're going to do."
Patti succeeds Ron Bess, who now assumes a larger corporate role as Vice Chairman, Integration and Business Development, Young & Rubicam Inc. Bess has served as Chairman and CEO of Y&RNY since 2001. Prior to that, he was Chairman of Y&R's former Diversified Communications Group, which consisted of Landor Associates, Burson-Marsteller, Cohn & Wolfe and Sudler & Hennessey. "This new role is a natural step up for Ron," said Mike Dolan. "It focuses all the experience he has had on the two critical issues in our growth strategy. He has a thorough understanding of the capabilities throughout the Y&R system and knows how to put them together on behalf of clients. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to leverage our unrivalled experience at putting together integrated marketing solutions," he added.
At the same time, Jim Ferguson has been named Executive Creative Director of Y&R North America. "Over the past four years, Jim has moved our creative work forward at Y&R New York. We are perceptibly stronger creatively," said Mike Dolan. "He will continue to work on key clients in New York. We will also leverage his immense talent against our other agencies in North America."
