From the CEO
It seems pretty certain that 2007 will be seen by historians as the year the world finally woke up to climate change. Scientists, politicians, business leaders, investors, pressure groups, religious leaders and the public are now deeply concerned about the potential consequences.
From the CEO
There has been a remarkable shift in attitude. Climate change is no longer seen as the fanciful risk of marginal changes in weather based on scant evidence.
At WPP we too have sharpened our senses. Just a few years ago we regarded our office-based organisation to have a relatively insignificant climate impact. Now, after looking carefully into the subject, we realise that modern offices consume a lot of energy, to power air conditioning, IT systems as well as generous lighting. We've also calculated the impact of our business air travel. In total, we believe our carbon footprint is close to 260,000 tonnes of CO2
Our strategy for dealing with this has three components: an energy efficiency programme for office design and the purchasing of energy-consuming equipment such as IT; a company policy to buy electricity from renewable sources wherever this is available; and the purchase of carbon offset from renewable energy schemes to neutralise our CO2
As a result, we intend to become carbon neutral by the end of 2007. In addition, we intend to cut our carbon footprint by 20% over the next four years and to continue to offset our remaining CO2
emissions. The parent company, together with our companies, will work hard to achieve this target.
You are an important part of the solution because every action, no matter how small, contributes to the global effort. This booklet describes climate change, explains what we are doing to become carbon neutral and how you can help at work and at home.
